Dental Inlays & Onlays

Custom-made restorations that provide superior strength and precision for larger cavities

Written by Dr Tristan TinnFounder & Clinical Director

What Are Inlays & Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are like custom puzzle pieces for your teeth. When a cavity is too large for a regular filling but not extensive enough to require a crown, these laboratory-made restorations provide the perfect solution.

Think of them as precision-engineered repairs that fit exactly into the prepared space in your tooth, restoring both function and appearance with exceptional strength.

Types of Custom Restorations

Inlays

Inlays fit within the cusps (raised points) of your tooth, like a perfectly fitted piece that sits inside the tooth structure without extending over the edges.

  • • Fits within the tooth cusps
  • • Ideal for moderate-sized cavities
  • • Preserves maximum natural tooth structure
  • • Excellent for back teeth

Inlays and Onlays

Onlays extend over one or more cusps of the tooth, providing coverage for larger areas of damage while still preserving more natural tooth structure than a crown.

  • • Covers one or more tooth cusps
  • • Ideal for larger cavities
  • • Stronger than large fillings
  • • Alternative to crowns in many cases

What Happens During Treatment?

First Visit: Preparation

Your dentist will numb the area and carefully remove any decay, then prepare the tooth to receive the inlay or onlay. Digital scans or impressions are taken and a temporary restoration is placed.

Laboratory Work

Your digital scan or impressions are sent to a dental laboratory where skilled technicians create your custom inlay or onlay to match your natural teeth perfectly.

Second Visit: Placement

The temporary restoration is removed and your custom inlay or onlay is carefully fitted and bonded to your tooth for a strong, lasting restoration.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do inlays and onlays last?

With proper care, inlays and onlays typically last 10-15 years or more. Their longevity depends on the material used, your oral hygiene habits, and regular dental check-ups.

Are inlays and onlays better than fillings?

For larger cavities, inlays and onlays offer superior strength, better fit, and longer-lasting results compared to traditional fillings. They're particularly beneficial for back teeth that endure heavy chewing forces.

How do I care for my inlay or onlay?

Care for your inlay or onlay just like your natural teeth - brush twice daily, floss regularly, and visit your dentist for check-ups. Avoid using your teeth as tools and maintain excellent oral hygiene.

Will my inlay or onlay be noticeable?

Modern inlays and onlays are made to match your natural tooth colour and are virtually indistinguishable from your natural teeth. They blend seamlessly with your smile.
