Understanding NHS Dental Care

The NHS provides essential dental care to help maintain your oral health at affordable prices. NHS dentistry focuses on clinically necessary treatments to prevent and treat dental disease, rather than purely cosmetic procedures. Around 23 million people in England access NHS dental services each year, though availability varies significantly by region.

Finding an NHS dentist accepting new patients can be challenging in some areas, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic which reduced NHS dental capacity. Some regions face waiting lists of 12-24 months for routine appointments. However, emergency dental care remains available through NHS 111 services across England and Wales.

NHS dental charges are set nationally and are significantly lower than private fees. In England, treatment is grouped into three bands: Band 1 (£26.80) covers examinations and preventive care, Band 2 (£73.50) includes fillings and extractions, and Band 3 (£306.80) covers more complex work like crowns and dentures. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland have different charging structures.
